Galpin Auto Sports unveils radical Scythe concept car

Remember the mysterious Mustang-based “Project B” concept car that we spied at Galpin Auto Sports last month? The completed version was unveiled this past weekend during a celebrity-packed party at the shop’s Southern California facility. We were spot-on with the specs of the car, including the twin-supercharged 5.0L V8 that is pushing out a claimed 1005 horsepower and the massive 16.5-inch Wilwood disc brakes. The Scythe also features unique composite body panels, a wrap-around pillarless glass cockpit, reverse opening vertical doors, and a voice-controlled computer that can offer up weather, traffic, sports, and more through a 3G network connection. Full details on the car can be found in the press release after the jump, and we’ll be sure to bring you more photos when we see the car at SEMA in just a few weeks.

SEMA Preview: Trio of HUMMER H3s set to invade Vegas

HUMMER’s presence at this year’s SEMA show will be typified by a trio of tuned H3s, ranging from a mildly modded Alpha to an H3T ready to traverse the desert surrounding Sin City.

The most sedate of the three is the warmed-over H3 X Alpha concept, which features new 18-inch wheels shod in 35-inch all-terrain tires, black chrome trim, body-colored bumper extensions and clear turn signal housings. The exterior is coated in Canyon Metallic, while inside, the leather seats, armrests and shift knob all receive contrasting orange stitching along with matching piping and a HUMMER Accessories DVD headrest system.

Far more impressive is the H3T Weekend Warrior concept (above), which capitalizes on HUMMER’s off-road cred with a series of engine and suspension mods. Output of the 5.3-liter V8 has been increased by around 70 hp through the use of an LS2 cylinder head, high-lift cam and custom 3.5-inch exhaust. Rolling stock is comprised of HUMMER Accessories’ 20-inch wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich Baja T/A rubber, suspended by a Light Racing Jounce Shocks and Rod Hall Racing piggyback performance reservoirs, with brakes provided by DBA.

Finally, Four Wheeler magazine got its own H3 Alpha to play with, and began by “de-glossing” the Victory Red paint scheme with a PPG flattening agent mixed with clear to give it an incredibly cool satin appearance. The only engine mod is a MagnaFlow cat-back exhaust, but what Four Wheeler didn’t spend on motivation it made up for with suspension components. Nitrogen-charged, two-inch Rod Hall Racing performance shocks and Light Racing Jounce Shocks compliment the flat-black 16-inch Simulock wheels coated in BFG Mud-Terrain T/A tires.

GM considers selling off ACDelcoGM

In this economic climate, everyone is looking to generate cash and reduce overhead. And General Motors is certainly no exception, the automotive giant already having announced its intention to sell off its HUMMER brand. The General is also looking to offload its facility in Strasbourg, France. But the biggest sale yet could be the potential divestment from ACDelco, one of GM’s parts subsidiaries.

ACDelco has been in operation for over 100 years, and offers no fewer than 37 product lines encompassing some 100,000 different parts on offer, both for GM vehicles and those made by rival automakers. The sale of ACDelco is part of a campaign to raise several billion in liquid assets for GM, and in as bold a sign of the times as any, the corporation has selected Merrill Lynch to manage the sale process.

Tesla working with Daimler for electric smarts?

Chalk this one firmly in the rumormill category, but Johnathan Bodily over at Street Import Online is reporting that he’s seen what appears to be an electric smart fortwo at Tesla’s facility in San Carlos plugged into a Tesla-branded charging station. What’s more, this particular smart differed from other fortwos in that it lacked a tail pipe. We know that Daimler has been running second-generation smart ed’s (with lithium ion batteries from an unknown source) around various locations for a little while, and that Tesla has stated that it has signed a few deals to supply batteries to other companies for their electric vehicle projects. Putting this final piece of the puzzle together, it appears we have enough circumstantial evidence to conclude that the Silicon Valley company is provided the batteries to Daimler for its new electric smart cars.

Hopefully, this collaboration will bear fruit in the form of both electric smart cars in America and provide Tesla Motors with some of the working capital it needs to continue forward with its Model S electric sedan project. We contacted Tesla for an official response, and as expected got a definitive “no comment.” Next question, is Tesla providing the battery packs for the MINI E? Any camera wielding readers who happen to be in the in the San Carlos, CA area might want to cruise past Tesla’s office and see if they can snap a picture of any cars plugged in outside the front door.

Why We Should Have Gone to Business School: the Ultimate Lambo Garage (VIDEO)

We can justify spending our time blogging about exotic supercars — instead of pursuing the wealth to acquire them — because once in a while we get a chance to get behind the wheel. But this just isn’t fair. Just like the “Justification for Higher Education” poster everyone had on their walls in the 80s, the video after the jump shows a trick garage housing not one, not two, but five Lamborghinis – a pair of Countaches (the later anniversary models from the looks of things) and a pair of hidden Diablos rising up from the underground like their namesake… and what appears to be a third Diablo inside. We’ll take some comfort in the notion that this must be some meeting of the local Lambo owners’ club and not one man’s private stash. Follow the jump to watch the short clip and thanks to Brad for the tip.

Force India negotiates deal to buy cars from McLaren

So far, the Force India team has had a consistent season in Formula One. Unfortunately, that means consistently running at the back. But Indian business mogul Vijay Mallya is committed to making a go of it, and the latest deal in the works could give his team the machinery they need to start moving up the field.

The deal is reportedly all but complete between perennial back-marker Force India and front-runners McLaren for the former to buy their cars – lock, stock and barrel – from the latter. It’s a highly tentative deal, however, as Formula One rules are due to be enacted that would ban customer cars. F1 teams are supposed to act as their own constructors, however other teams – such as Red Bull and Toro Rosso, Honda and the defunct Super Aguri – have been using common designs. David Richards’ Prodrive outfit was slated to re-enter the series with customer cars from McLaren, but withdrew their tender at the last minute due to the anticipated ban on customer cars. Force India, which currently builds its own chassis and buys engines from Ferrari, evidently thinks the rules won’t be enforced. If it is allowed to proceed, the Force India team would turn into an effective B-squad for McLaren.

Spy Shots: Porsche GT3 RS

Coming to the meaty part of the 911 model line revamp, the 2010 GT3 RS has been spotted after some time in wardrobe wearing slightly different clothes. These are subtle alterations, with LED daytime running lights, bigger intakes, a new air dam lip up front and revised taillights out back. The bigger news is that the GT3 RS will get more power with the addition of direct injection, and even faster gear changes when equipped with the PDK gearbox. And that means even faster acceleration, because you can never get enough of that. The car should start making its rounds around the auto show circuit next year.

Ad firms could lose big in GM/Chrysler merger

GM and Chrysler spent a combined $4.75 billion on marketing last year which funded thousands of jobs, from the CEOs of ad agencies to the guys pasting up billboards on the Interstate. So how would a merger of the two companies affect the advertising industry?

Advertising Age asked several players in the biz what they thought of the idea of Chrysler and GM hooking up and most few positive things to say. The consensus was that GM already has too many brands to promote, adding three more wouldn’t benefit anyone. The execs said they would expect GM to at least sell off Chrysler, if not Dodge, too, which would trim GM’s ad budget, but also cut the number of marketing firms needed.

At first it would seem Chrysler’s agency, Omnicom Group’s BBDO, would be an instant loser. But auto consultant Gordon Wangers gives the firm some chance of being kept on. Wangers said GM might just see potential in BBDO’s experience and creativity, and throw even more business its way.

The magazine also speculates that GM’s veteran VP of sales, Mark LaNeve, would have a better chance of keeping his job in a merger instead of Chrysler’s VP-chief Marketing Officer Deborah Wahl Meyer.

Don’t think this concerns you? Think again. Consider where your local newspaper or favorite magazine gets most of its funding. Still not concerned? TV shows, televised sporting events, motorsports, and, uh, blogs, are all ad based, with automotive ads being a big source of income. Fewer brands means fewer ads.

Green car advocate proves first hand how small cars aren’t deathtraps

Despite numerous positive crash test results and assurances from both manufacturers and safety organizations, we still hear people say they’ll never trade their bank-safe SUV for one of those little tin cans on wheels. This makes some people wonder what it would take to change folks’ minds about automotive safety.

A first-hand account from Nick Chambers, an admitted greenie who blogs for gas2.0.org, slammed his Yaris into a dirt embankment then rolled it three times. He not only lived, but walked away from his crumpled Toyota with little more than a bump and a really sore neck. He also admits that before his little off-road excursion in the Yaris, he wasn’t completely sold on small car safety. But now he says, “Yes. Yes I would trust my family to a small fuel-efficient car, and I’m miraculously alive and mostly uninjured… so no, it’s not a death trap.”
