Autocar pits GT2 against Z06 in a drag competition

What do you do with a Porsche GT2, a Corvette Z06, and an abandoned aircraft runway? That’s obvious: you line both cars up, nail the throttle and crown the victor. Thankfully, that’s exactly what the chaps at Autocar did when they pitted the new GT2 against the Z06 on a long piece of straight pavement. No timing lights, no start/finish line, just two guys with heavy right feet and a camera crew to capture the action.

To refresh your memory, the GT2 is the hottest car currently in Porsche’s inventory. Under its decklid, a 3.6-liter twin-turbo six-cylinder powerplant pumps out an impressive 530 hp and 500 lb.-ft. of torque. The Chevrolet Z06 has been in showrooms a bit longer, but nothing holds back its 7.0-liter eight-cylinder engine packing a 505 hp punch with 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Oh yeah, we should mention (before you all point it out) the German costs about twice as much as the American.

We won’t tell you who wins the Porsche vs. Chevrolet battle, but we will say the contest will be significantly more “balanced” when the blokes can bring the upcoming 620 hp 2009 Corvette ZR1 to the tarmac.

As fanboys of any great car will tell you, at some point in your life you have make a pilgrimage to the birthplace of your favorite car. For Corvette fans, that means a trip to Bowling Green, Kentucky, current home of the Vette assembly plant, as well as the National Corvette Museum. One of the cool things about being in the vicinity of an assembly plant like Bowling Green is that you occasionally spot vehicles that aren’t generally available yet. Such was the case for one lucky Vette-lover who goes by the handle Blade3562.

After emerging from the museum, Blade spotted a veritable fleet of fresh C6 Corvettes sitting in a Wendys parking lot across the street from the factory. Upon closer inspection, he realized they were all of the ZR1 variety with the drivers apparently fueling up inside in preparation for the journey north to Michigan. Of the eight cars, one was in the particular shade of blue seen in the initial batch of press shots while the rest were split between yellow and red models. We’ve already seen a number of yellow prototypes from back when this thing was still wearing camouflage, including one that made a brief appearance at last year’s Laguna Seca ALMS weekend. The red ZR1s, however, are new to our eyes and the shade works well with the carbon fiber roof. While we sit here twiddling our thumbs, waiting for Chevrolet to call and invite us out for a drive, you can enjoy the video after the jump that Blade3562 assembled from his photos.



Paris 2008: Chevy Cruze unveiled on eve of show, interior revealed

We’ve gotten a pretty good look at the 2010 Chevy Cruze already, but the model that had been making rounds in the U.S. was nothing more than a styling buck with no guts inside. Today, just a few hours ahead of the Paris Motor Show, General Motors has revealed the rest of the Cruze, including its interior, and we like what we see. The exterior looks crisp and shows off Chevy’s latest design language, especially with the Malibu-esque face and sharp headlights. Everyone agrees that it’s a step-up styling-wise from its Cobalt forebear. It’s the interior that really shines, though. What appears to be a tweed-like fabric covers sweeping colored panels from the dash to the doors. Two large gauges, two smaller ones and a digital readout places the most important information front-and-center while a cluster of buttons sits just below a centrally-located LCD screen. Meanwhile, the center stack appears to be a fresh design, though any judgment on its ergonomics will have to wait.

We won’t be getting the Cruze in the States until April 2010 as a 2011 model. When that finally happens, the Cruze will be powered by a 140-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, which will somehow manage to achieve above 40 mpg on the highway. If you want it now, perhaps you should stop buying so many Cobalts. In Europe, sales will begin in March of 2009 with a range of gas and diesel powerplants.

Paris 2008: Orlando Concept previews production Chevy MPV

Now that the Paris Motor Show is finally upon us, General Motors has officially taken the wraps off its new Orlando Concept. In case you hadn’t noticed, SUVs aren’t selling well right now, GM has given up on minivans and Chevrolet has nothing but CUVs to fill the void. Multi-Purpose Vehicles are hot sellers in Europe and the Orlando gives a clear indication that the General has noticed that trend and will be entering the MPV segment soon. Seven seats fill the large available interior space of the Orlando, which comes courtesy of the modified Delta II platform that’s shared with the recently unveiled Cruze sedan. Those seats also fold flat for versatile cargo-carrying utility.

Ice-blue accents cover both the interior and exterior of the Orlando Concept and solar panels are fixed to the roof in a nod to its concept status. On the inside, there’s a lot going on with multiple fabric and plastic textures, but the overall layout looks pretty solid. Power for the Orlando comes from a 150-horsepower 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine that offers up nearly 200 lb-ft of torque.

Bill Heard Chevrolet files Chapter 11, owes $229 million

Bill Heard Chevrolet, which had been the largest Chevy dealer in the world by volume, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection this week after closing down all of its 13 stores last week, and the tale of financial ruin is surprisingly bad. The dealer conglomerate owes $229 million to GMAC financing, BMW financing, and JP Morgan Chase, but with the Chapter 11 filing, much of the money owed will likely never see the light of day.

Bill Heard Chevrolet was the self-proclaimed “Mr. Big Volume” car shopping superstore that pushed Motown metal out its showroom doors even for customers with bad credit. The Georgia-based dealer seems to have had as many enemies as it had vehicle sales, and the state of Georgia just last month accused it of misleading business practices and forging signatures. The over 2,000 employees at the 14 dealerships are also considering a class action wrongful termination lawsuit that stems from the abrupt conclusion of their employment. Bill Heard Chevrolet was losing between $2 and $5 million dollars per month since mid-2007, and with woeful sales across the U.S., we’re guessing it won’t be the last dealership conglomerate to end abruptly

Paris 2008: Chevy Orlando Concept outdoes the HHR

Ever wish the Chevy HHR would evolve into something more cool than kitsch? What that would be is the Chevy Orlando Concept, a seven-passenger multi-purpose vehicle that will be entering production in Europe sometime in the near future. We sincerely hope General Motors considers selling the production version in the U.S. as a replacement for the HHR, as its slab sides and chunky stance impart a much more grown up and aggressive attitude than Chevy’s current compact people mover. And just like the HHR is based on the compact Cobalt’s platform, the production Orlando will be based on the same platform as the upcoming Cruze, which itself will be sold in both Europe and the U.S. There’s really not a doubt in our minds that the Orlando is being developed to replace the HHR in the U.S. while it simultaneously enters a new segment in Europe for Chevy. As for when the production version will appear, we don’t know. All we know is that this MPV has got a lot of promise. Check out our new gallery of high-res live shots below to see if you agree.

Automotive X-Prize recommends EPA adopt MGEe rating

Now that the California Air Resources Board (CARB) has an agreement with General Motors regarding how to measure the fuel mileage of the 2011 Chevy Volt, our attention turns to the EPA, which now has to decide what official mileage rating will appear on the new car’s window sticker and how to determine what that number will be. The first recommendation comes from the Automotive X-Prize, the foundation of which will award $10 million from Progressive Insurance to the winner of its competition to design a production-viable car that people would want to drive that gets 100 MPGe or more.

What’s with that little ‘e’ after the familiar miles per gallon? Basically, the X-Prize crew wants to convert all units of energy to a figure that’s equivalent to the power from a gallon of gas. That way, a car’s powerplant – regardless of where it gets that energy from – earns a rating that can be easily compared with everything else. So, EPA, the ball’s in your court… still.

We loved the look and concept of Katech’s Corvette Z06 ClubSport that we showed you last month, as did many of our readers. The emphasis on light weight components and track-ready components make it suitable for both street and racing duties, plus it’s one of the most beautiful renditions of the Corvette we’ve seen to date. Our only complaint was that Katech provided just one photo to drool over. Fortunately, they remedied the situation by sending us a set of beautiful high-resolution photos, which we’ve added to the gallery below. Settle down: Volt batteries can recharge while driving

Inside Line kicked up a dust storm yesterday by claiming that the 2011 Chevy Volt could not recharge its batteries while driving using its on-board, range-extending 1.4L gas engine. 40 miles of electric-only drive was it, and then the battery packs become “400 pounds of uselessness” was what IL said. They got this impression from a press release issued when the production Volt was unveiled to the public, which stated that the gas engine could only “sustain” the battery pack’s charge and not increase it. GM got its communications crossed and apparently confirmed IL’s take, but has thought about it some more and today reconfirmed what we initially thought was true, that the Volt’s gas engine can recharge its batteries while underway.

What the Volt’s gas engine can’t do is completely recharge the battery pack to its full capacity. Rather, when load conditions are light the gas engine will send surplus electrons to the battery pack, which will also be receiving extra charge from regenerative braking, as well. That sounds about right to us, as we’ve always been told that constantly charging a battery to its maximum will shorten its life, as the optimum charge range is usually between 20 and 80 percent, not completely drained and not completely charged. GM is determining right now just how much it wants to let the gas engine charge the Volt’s battery pack, but rest comfortably knowing that your future Volt won’t be carrying around 400 lbs. of uselessness when the charge runs out.

2011 Chevy Volt one step closer to being rated at 100+ mpg

According to General Motors E-Flex spokesman Rob Peterson, the automaker has reached an agreement with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) that would see the 2011 Chevy Volt get a unique classification different from other current hybrids. This new classification takes into account the fact that the Volt’s 40-mile battery range allows it to complete the bulk of the emissions and economy test procedure without ever running the engine, which would likely give it a mpg rating of 100 mpg or better.

This is problematic for the EPA, which considers dual-power vehicles like the series hybrid Volt no different than a parallel hybrid like the Prius. Currently the EPA is expecting the Volt to complete the test cycle with a charged battery, which means the engine would have to run a lot more and essentially kill the charge sustaining control plan. According to Peterson, GM is still a long way from reaching an agreement with the feds on how to test the Volt, despite what the Detroit Free Press says. However, having CARB consider the Volt essentially an electric car is certainly a bargaining chip in GM’s favor.
